Credit/Debit Card Security

With so many ways to use your credit or debit cards to make purchases these days it is very important to be aware of what you can do to keep your information and accounts private.  Cinfed has put together the following suggestions.

  • Never lend your debit card or credit card to anyone, including family or friends.  Do not use your debit card or credit card to establish a service for someone else or pay a bill for someone else.  Your debit card or credit card will stay on file with that merchant.
     
  • Do not deposit checks into your account through an ATM on someone’s behalf.  You will be held responsible if the check is fraudulent.
     
  • Always keep your debit card or credit card in a secure location if it is not with you.
     
  • Never use your debit card for a “free” trial or “free” sample.  Only shop online with merchants you know and/or research a merchant before using your card to shop online.  Look for a key or lock icon on the merchant’s website, or “https” in the website address, indicating that the website is secure.
     
  • Do not reveal your PIN number to anyone.  Never write your PIN number on your card or keep it in your wallet.  Avoid using digits from your telephone number, social security number, date of birth or any number someone could easily figure out.  Do not use the same PIN number for all of your cards.
     
  • Never write your card numbers, savings/checking account numbers, social security number or PIN numbers where anyone can see them or in any combination together, such as on a check or envelope.  Never put your account information in an email.
     
  • Always report lost or stolen cards immediately upon discovery
    Lost/stolen debit card:  1-866-820-8859; Lost/stolen credit card:  1-800-449-7728.
     
  • Sign your cards as soon as you receive them.
     
  • Sign up for online banking (It’s free!) and review your transactions daily or at least 3 times a week.  Review your account statement upon receipt; if you know a statement is late in the mail contact the card issuer.  Report any suspicious transactions or discrepancies immediately.
     
  • Always shred, or destroy beyond repair, account statements and credit card offers received in the mail.  Never leave your receipt on a restaurant table; make sure the server picks it up before you exit the restaurant.

Debit card and/or credit card fraud can’t always be prevented, but you can protect yourself in many ways by following the above safety tips.  It only takes a moment to be smart and protect yourself from fraud.
