If you’ve used a debit or credit card to make a purchase in a retail store lately (or if you’ve gotten a new credit or debit card), you may have noticed a new symbol:
That indicates that you can conduct transactions using contactless technology: instead of swiping or inserting your card, you can simply tap to pay. Newly issued Cinfed debit and credit cards now feature this technology, so when you check out anywhere that features tap to pay terminals, you can pay without touching the unit. Just tap or wave your debit or credit card — or use your digital wallet — and be on your way. You don’t have to touch the terminal at all.
How do contactless cards work?
Contactless debit and credit cards contain a near field communication (NFC) chip and a radio frequency antenna (RFID). Checkout terminals equipped with this technology use radio waves to obtain your payment information. You just:
- Look for the contactless symbol on checkout terminals.
- Tap your card on the terminal.
- Go as soon as you hear the beep, or see the green light or checkmark, letting you know your purchase is complete.1
Are contactless payments secure?
When you pay with a contactless card, a one-time code is exchanged to keep your purchase secure. It does not transmit any personal information like your name, security code or billing information. Plus you don’t have to worry about anyone in the vicinity seeing or stealing your account information. Contactless cards are as secure as cards with chips and more secure than swiping a magnetic strip.
How do I know if my card is contactless?
If you have a new or recently replaced Cinfed debit or credit card, it comes with contactless technology. Look for the contactless symbol on the front of your card. If your card is not contactless, it will be updated on your replacement card after your current card expires.
Contactless card advantages
With tap-to-pay technology, contactless cards make in-store purchases easy and fast. In addition, they minimize surface contacts to help ensure your retail interactions are safer. You can also use your card through your digital wallet to have another option. Of course, your card also continues to meet the needs of other payment formats, whether in person or online.
